Sam Pivnik was born on 1 September 1926 in Bedzin, in South-western Poland, near the border with Germany.In 1943 the family were sent to Auschwitz II/Birkenau where Sam's father and mother, his two sisters and his three younger brothers were murdered. Derek Jarman was born in London in 1942. His career spanned decades and genres, from painter, theatre designer, director, film-maker, to poet, writer, campaigner and gardener. His features include Sebastiane (1976), Jubilee (1978), Caravaggio (1986), The Last of England (1987), Edward II (1991) and Blue (1993). His paintings – for which he was a Turner Prize nominee in 1986 – continue to be exhibited worldwide, and his garden in Dungeness remains a site of pilgrimage to fans and newcomers alike.

I don't particularly like Derek's paintings. I am not a gardener. I am not gay. His movies are, for me, a bit more in one's face than is needed to make his point Yet this is one of the most compelling, loving, intelligent, courageous and beautifully written autobiographies that I have read or could ever hope to read. I think my newly acquired Kindle version will be my fourth read.
Agree with other reviewer’s remarks. As a diary of his life there is often mention of names and recounts of ordinary events with friends that may not be familiar or even interesting to readers .But this is his life and what makes this such a fantastic read are Jarman’s courage and the most powerful and romantic love story with HB.
Published journals by their very nature can be dull and opaque. If you're not familiar with the author's creative work and life it's easy to get lost in a forest of names and references which leaves you feeling bored and alienated. For this reason, journals generally dissaude you from reading them cover to cover though they may be quite illuminating when dipped into. That's not the case with this, the final volume of Jarman's journals. The way he writes is so direct and frank that it is utterly compelling. I didn't want to skip any of it. Jarman's uncompromising approach to art and life must have alienated a lot of people (on the margins as well as in the mainstream). Good! We need to be shaken up. Jarman shows his courage here but also his vulnerability. The journals are never mawkish or sentimental, but they left me greatly moved. Jarman continued to work on films, books and paintings while dealing with the daily burden of HIV-related illness and this book documents that process. It's also very much about the people who surrounded him and the things he liked to do, particularly in relation to his cottage and the unique and celebrated garden at Dungeness. Vale, Derek. I wish I could have told you how much I admire you.
